A Treat for Martlemas

For our family, the Feast of St. Martin marks the beginning of autumn. By early November usually the weather has finally chosen to cool off here down south and we gleefully send the blazing summer heat on its way. Martlemas is the day we officially switch out all the boys’ denim shorts for jeans and got through all the stored clothes to see what others could use. To celebrate, we start with “beggar bags” containing winter pajamas and signature flavors of the season like maple, apple, pear, ginger, and cinnamon. Below is a super simple breakfast treat for the day that I hope your family enjoys as much as mine. It is a spin on the traditional polish rolls for St. Martin’s Day called marcinki.

Autumn Pear Roll Ups

Yield: 8 rolls

Preheat oven to 35o* F


2 Pears, quartered

1 can Crescent rolls

3 TBS Brown Sugar

3 TBS Granulated White Sugar

Cardamon, to sprinkle (the new Cinnamon)

Cinnamon, to sprinkle

Ginger, to sprinkle


Once ingredients are assembled, unroll crescent dough on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle both sugars and all spices evenly over the dough. Place one pear slice on the larger end of each dough triangle and roll up. Bake until golden brown – about 10 minutes.
